TECHNOLOGICAL UPGRADATION IN THE JUTE MILLS OF BANGLADESH

The jute manufacturing sector of Bangladesh has recently started to revitalise with the rise in globaldemand for jute goods, thanks to the environment-friendly nature of jute, and the price hike of petroleum products, an essential raw material for its substitute, polypropylene. Nevertheless the industry has struggled with its low level of competitiveness against its substitute products in terms of cost, ability to handle bulk volume of products and diversity of product. For long-term sustainability of the industry,improvement of productivity and manufacturing of better quality and diversified products are being regarded as the most important issues. The present study titled Technological Upgradation in the Jute Mills: Challenges and Way Out has been carried out with this broad objective. More specifically the study has examined the market potentials of jute goods at local and international levels; investigated the current status of jute mills in terms of machines, workers, working environment and production process; analysed the productivity and efficiency of jute mills; and estimated the possible gains through improvement of efficiency in the jute mills. Based on the findings, the study put forward necessary suggestions to modernise the machineries, improve the production process, and develop human resources in the jute manufacturing sector. The study is based on the data collected from 10 sample jute mills of both spinning and composite categories which are under the authority or membership of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC), Bangladesh Jute Mills Association (BJMA) and Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association (BJSA). Since it is a sample survey-based study, the findings are likely to be considered as indicative with regard to the objectives of the study.

Customers’ Attitude towards Wireless Internet Services in Bangladesh: An Empirical Study Comparing WIMAX Based and EDGE/EVDO Based Internet Service

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

 This study is an attempt to measure the attitude of customers towards the wireless Internet services in Bangladesh based on the Mertin Fishbein’s multi attribute attitude model. Some salient attributes (i.e., speed, bandwidth fluctuation rate) of WIMAX based and EDGE/EVDO based Internet services that affect the attitude of the customers have been selected which customers emphasizes to take purchase-decision as well as usage continuation decision. Two types of wireless Internet service providers (WIMAX and EDGE/EVDO) and ten salient attributes have been considered for this study. It has been found from the study that customers form more positive attitude towards WIMAX based Internet service than EDGE/EVDO based service. Observed differences in mean attitude of different attributes for the two categories of wireless Internet services are measured through Z-test to test the significance of those differences. Findings of this study may be used as an index by the Internet service providers for improvement of their services to satisfy the customers.

The negative impact of the global financial crisis appeared in the performance in 2007 but most IT firms seemed to have recovered in 2008. This indicates the inherent strength of the sector in terms of productivity and efficiency. It is observed that e-governance activities contribute to

Manuscript received: October 02, 1999;
 Accepted: December 20, 1999

Summary:
An approach to vectorizing binary image of engineering drawing, specially irregular shape is presented in this paper. The preliminary steps include detection and elimination of noise components and skewness. Lines, circles and arcs are detected using existing Hough, transform and chain method is used for both bounded and unbounded irregular shapes.
